What is ConvertKit and why would I use it?
ConvertKit is a cloud-based email marketing automation system and lead generation solution. Who is ConvertKit for? It is designed for course creators, YouTubers, podcasters, bloggers and other business owners who create and share content online. The system helps you to increase your email subscriber list and automate email marketing with drag-n-drop email sequences, workflow automation rules, landing page templates, custom opt-in forms, and more.
With ConvertKit, you can create click-worthy opt-in forms and embed them on your website. The forms will adjust to the place where they are added such as the sidebar, ends of posts, etc. You can create an unlimited amount of forms with each offering to entice more sign-ups.
Plus, you can set specific opt-in forms for individual posts and add a precise call to action for each post. The ConvertKit offers three landing page templates and you can easily customize text, textures, patterns, and colors without coding skills. For other custom changes, you can add CSS code as an option.
One of the perks to ConvertKit is that you to send email broadcasts to the complete list of subscribers. You can even personalize the messages to a select group to announce discounts, product launches, fresh blog posts, etc. You can even save these groups for future email campaigns. Besides, you can exclude groups of subscribers from the email broadcast such as customers who have previously bought the product offered in the messages.

Is ConvertKit easy to use?
I found the features are easy to use and the navigation in the system is organized logically. One drawback that might not work for some users is that sometimes you need to mess with HTML code to get the results you want. With ConvertKit, I feel like the instructions and the ability to preview the emails are really good. That way I can trust that my emails will launch correctly without a doubt.
Although the editor is fast and easy to understand, it is very basic. The best way to describe it as a text editor that you would use it when sending a regular email. You will be limited to regular text, bulleted and ordered lists, horizontal lines, simple images, and file uploads. There are easy to follow instructions, blog posts, and videos on each page which helps you get the most out of ConvertKit.
Another added bonus to ConvertKit is the WordPress plugin that will make it easy to integrate the sign-up forms on your posts, pages, and blog sidebar. ConvertKit’s email sequences will help you picture the paths customers are taking through your marketing system.

What is in the ConvertKit free beginner’s plan?
The free plan is made for beginner new to email marketing, which great for those who don’t even have a website yet. This helps remove a large costly roadblock for a beginner learning how to a living online. The free plan allows you to make unlimited landing pages and forms. You can choose from multiple templates, add personalization, and design. You will also have the ability to include an incentive email, create a thank you page, manage subscribers, and send broadcast emails. You are limited to 1000 subscribers on the free plan, after that, you will have to upgrade to a paid plan.
What’s the difference between the ConvertKit Free plan and the Complete plan?
The Free plan was launched to give creators a way to test out new ideas and take that first leap without having to build a full website. Instead of jumping through hoop after hoop of domain names and registrations, a creator can now build a landing page in minutes to get their creative project out into the world.
The point of the Free plan: it’s a tool to help creators and bloggers to get started. The Free plan includes unlimited landing pages and forms and email broadcast sending to 1000 subscribers.
The other features in ConvertKit (automations and sequences) are available to creators on the Complete plan.
However, creators on the Free plan can take part in our Refer a Friend program to unlock more features.
- Each successful referral lets both you and your friend add 100 subscribers to manage for free.
- The more friends you refer to create a ConvertKit account, the more subscribers you can add in your own account (Limit: 500 subscribers).
Extra bonus – If you’re on the Complete plan you can also add more subscribers through the Refer a Friend program.
What else can you do with ConvertKit?
You can create automation rules to set up landing pages, automated workflows, triggered by events such as product purchases, completed courses, new subscriptions, etc. The application offers automation blueprints to help you set up automation workflows that cover automated launches, product pitches, webinars, onboarding, and more.
What are some disadvantages to ConvertKit?
- There are some simple edits you can do to the email and form templates. However, if you want to dress it up, you will need to know CSS or HTML. If you are not into coding then this can cause some difficulties for you. If you just want a simplified email marketing solution and not planning to do coding, then ConverKit will work for you.
- ConvertKit has a limited A/B testing functionality and reporting data is limited also. However, simplicity is not always a bad thing.
- If you want to send video emails then ConvertKit might not the tool for you. You can use small video GIFs and links to YouTube, landing page with embedded video, and Loom video in your ConvertKit emails. I find that to be the easiest way around that issue. I prefer to do my video emails this way so it is not a big deal to me.
ConvertKit free beginner’s plan would be a better fit for you if you are looking into getting started with email marketing and don’t want to get overload. Sometimes when an email marketing tool has too many bells and whistles it can be very overwhelming! I would suggest selecting the right tool for the direction you want to go, in your email marketing strategy.

Interesting post. I need to change my email plugin. Using Mail Poet but it’s very limiting!
I agree they are limiting. I used Mail Poet for a little while but it wasn’t sending out my newsletters so I kick them to the curb.
I would love to use converkit but its too rich for my blood (for the moment). Hopefully that will change! Great post btw

Long time supporter, and thought I’d drop a comment.
Your wordpress site is very sleek – hope you don’t
mind me asking what theme you’re using? (and don’t mind if I steal it?
:P)
I just launched my site –also built-in WordPress like yours– but the theme slows
(!) the site down quite a bit.
Keep up the good work– and hope you all take care of yourself
during the coronavirus scare!
Justin thank you for your kind words. I am using the Astra Theme it is a lightweight, well coded, and good for SEO. I spent a month redesigning my website before moving it off of WIX. If you want your header image to move as mine does on my homepage, then you will also want to get the free Elementor plugin. With Elementor you can make that image do the Paralaxing effect. I hope that helps! I will be releasing training soon to help people who want to start their own blogs. Stay safe and healthy!
